Ayurveda (pronounced eye-yer-vay-duh) is the Vedic art of healthy living.
Through Ayurveda we create harmony in daily life by combining knowledge
of self with self-care. The word, Ayurveda, is from the ancient Indian
language, Sanskrit, and literally means "Knowledge of Life".
Inherent in Ayurvedic principles is the concept that one takes charge
of his or her own life and healing.
Ayurveda may come from ancient texts, but these principles are as applicable
in today’s society as they were when they were written in India.
The Ayurvedic approach involves listening to and addressing the unique
needs of the body. By recognizing and balancing mental, emotional and
physical states, one deepens the connection between body and mind.
Ayurveda recognizes three main energies as fundamental to all life. We
see them in the processes of growth, maintenance, and decay. In western
science, their interactions are named anabolism, metabolism, and catabolism.
In Ayurveda, these basic energies are called Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
In Ayurveda, we recognize how these energies are at work at each moment
in our bodies and minds.
These energies combine in limitless ways to create the unique qualities
of each individual. When you become aware of these qualities within yourself,
you take the first steps toward creating a healthy life. By identifying
these energies in the body, we can more fully experience their gifts
and gain freedom from their limitations. Thus we begin to create balance
by countering destructive forces with positive actions and create true
health. Ayurveda can be the mirror that reflects our true nature and
maps out a path to return to a life full of vitality.
Ayurveda can assist you on this healing journey by balancing the body
through the foods you eat and how you eat them, through daily practices
including exercise, rest and massage, and through ‘five-sense’ therapies
utilizing color, aroma, taste, touch, and sound. Once you begin to incorporate
these principles in your daily activities, you will see positive benefits
in every aspect of your life.
